While we’ve loved the breezy, anime-inspired aesthetic of the animated series so far, showrunner Jake Wyatt has confirmed that the show's next primary villain is the imposing Cyborg Superman, raising the stakes across the Man of Steel's expanding universe.
Reworking a Classic Nineties Arc
The original Reign of the Supermen arc emerged in the wake of the Man of Steel's death in 1992. After Clark fell to Doomsday, four very different figures arrived in Metropolis claiming to be the true hero. While the original story featured an array of impostors like John Henry Irons (Steel), Superboy, and the Eradicator, the animated adaptation is taking a highly distinct approach. Wyatt assured fans that season 3 will not simply be a straightforward retelling of the source material or a rehash of The Death of Superman story seen in previous live-action adaptations. Instead, it will dive directly into the philosophy of what makes a hero.
The Man Behind the Machine
In the source material, the Cyborg Superman is revealed to be Hank Henshaw—a tragic astronaut-turned-villain who turns the public's trust against the hero before destroying entire cities. The animated series has already established a version of Henshaw as a researcher at S.T.A.R. Labs at the end of season 2. Rather than focusing on the absolute end of the Man of Tomorrow, the upcoming batch of episodes explores multiple characters who share the hero’s powers but operate with completely different moral compasses.
Expanding the Intergalactic Sandbox
The arrival of a metallic adversary also hints at wider, universe-spanning consequences. With the My Adventures with Green Lantern series currently in development, Jessica Cruz is set to cross over into My Adventures with Superman for its third season. Whether the Cyborg becomes a threat to the entire Green Lantern Corps remains to be seen, but the universe is growing rapidly.
